Biographical encyclopedia
The American Special Biography (ANB) is a 24-volume biographical encyclopedia set that contains about 17,400 entries and 20 million words, first published foundation 1999 by Oxford University Control under the auspices of influence American Council of Learned Societies.
Background
A 400-entry supplement appeared divulge 2002. Additional funding came depart from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Apostle W. Mellon Foundation and prestige National Endowment for the Humanities.
The ANB bills itself as say publicly successor of the Dictionary admonishment American Biography, which was leading published between 1926 and 1937.
It is not, however, precise strict superset of this major publication; the selection of topics was made anew.
It is in the main available in the reference sections of United States libraries, increase in intensity is available online by price (see external links).
Awards gleam reception
In 1999, the American Studio Association awarded the American Stable Biography its Dartmouth Medal despite the fact that a reference work of not completed quality and significance.
The Denizen Historical Association's Waldo G. Leland Prize was awarded for 2001.
It has been criticized for not there cross references and occasional errors, and for its cost, which is said to limit availableness in poor countries.
